Acne-Prone Skin: Why Breakouts Happen and the Best Solutions

Acne is an unpleasant skin condition experienced by millions of people worldwide. Hormonal imbalance, access to sebum production, bacterial infection, etc., are leading causes of acne-prone skin. Understanding the real reason behind having acne can help in preventing breakouts.

What's the real reason behind Breakouts?

Sebum is the oily or wax-like substance produced by sebaceous glands to maintain moisture levels in the skin. People with acne-prone skin have access to sebum production, the leading reason for acne.
Clogged pores are another situation where acne and breakouts are seen. Skin pores get blocked due to dead skin cells, dirt/dust, bacteria, etc. This is the ideal environment for acne-prone bacteria. Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a bacterium that triggers acne and breakouts, causing skin inflammation and related issues.
Puberty, Pregnancy, and menstruation can stimulate acne and skin conditions. The hormonal changes that happen during this time lead to acne production.
Many have suggested that improving diet and lifestyle habits reduces acne issues. Managing stress and adequate sleep is an essential factor. If these things are imbalanced, acne and breakouts are bound to happen.
Nevertheless, we cannot deny that genetics and family history also contribute to acne and skin issues. If you have family members who have acne and blemishes, there is a higher chance you will also have them. However, having a genetic predisposition cannot be changed. We can change our lifestyle, skincare routine, products, etc.

How can one prevent Acne and Breakouts?

The first important thing to prevent acne is cleansing. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser to help remove dirt, dust, bacteria, etc. Once or twice a week, you can also use exfoliation. This helps in removing dead skin cells and prevents skin clogging. While using exfoliation, ensure you are not using rough scrubs, which irritate the skin.
In case of acne breakouts, use a few topical ointments to control them. Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, and  Retinoids can help prevent skin clogging.
Don't forget that oily and acne-prone skin also needs hydration. Select appropriate products that can hydrate your skin. Sunscreen lotion with SPF >30 is essential for acne-prone skin.
Along with the above tips, you can also change your lifestyle. Reducing the intake of sugary and processed foods can reduce acne. Increase fibre intake in daily diet. From time to time, detoxification can help, too.

Conclusion:
Acne-prone skin can be managed with lifestyle changes, skincare routine and the right products. What has helped you in your acne management? Do let us know in the comments.
