You need to choose skincare products based on the ingredients present in them, and you need to be careful, especially if you have sensitive skin. Let us look at some skincare ingredients that you need to look out for!

How can skincare ingredients be classified?

Let us look at the classification of skincare ingredients:

  • Active ingredients: Active ingredients play a major role in the skincare product's functioning. They deal with acne, skin pigmentation, and such specific concerns. Examples include Vitamin C, niacinamides, etc.
  • Filler ingredients: Filler ingredients play a role in supporting the active ingredients. Examples include emulsifiers, oil, water, etc.
  • Functional ingredients: Functional ingredients would work for overall skin health. Examples include glycerin, ceramides, etc.

Which ingredients are best for your skin?

Even though each skin is unique and can have different needs, let us look at some ingredients that would generally help in promoting optimal skin health.

  1. Hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid helps in moisture retention by battling dry skin. Apart from this, Hyaluronic acid can also prevent premature aging, fine lines, and wrinkle formation. It also helps to promote skin elasticity and reduce skin inflammation. It can speed up the process of wound healing, too.
  2.  Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid can be beneficial, especially for individuals with oily skin. It helps to unclog the pores and prevent acne breakouts or pimples. If your skin is sensitive, you might particularly experience a stinging or burning sensation on your skin on application of salicylic acid. In such cases, it is better to apply creams containing this ingredient to a small part of your skin and check for any reactions overnight. Start by using it slowly and moderately.
  3. Retinoids: Retinoids work against acne or wrinkles by increasing the cell turnover rate and unclogging the pores. Retinoids can vary in concentration rate so start with a lower concentration initially. Use it only once or twice a week.
  4. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a popular antioxidant that protects you against free radical damage. It can promote the production of collagen and elastin, thus helping in skin elasticity. The same rule of trying it in a lower concentration first is important before gradually elevating the dosage, only if needed.
  5. Niacinamide: Niacinamide helps in improving the skin’s texture, reduces blemishes, and evens out skin tone. It can also improve the skin barrier and improve elasticity as well. It also prevents premature aging and improves skin complexion. It helps in protecting skin from free radicals.
  6. Ceramides: Ceramides help to lock in moisture and lock out environmental pollutants. It can improve the skin’s hydration and reduce the appearance of scaly/dry patches.

Wrap up your skin routine using these beneficial ingredients that can optimize your skin health. Remember, every skin type is different, so each skin can has its own unique needs. For personalized skincare advice, consult a healthcare professional.
