Skin Issues 101: Acne, Dryness & Aging Causes

The three devils: acne breakouts, dryness, and aging, can welcome chaos into your skin before you even know it! How can you tackle them quickly? By knowing the root causes of these three devils and how to manage them. Let’s have a look at how to do so.

What exactly is acne?

Acne is a skin condition wherein the skin pores or hair follicles get clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

What are the causes of acne?

There are 3 common causes of acne. Let’s have a look at them:

  1. Sebum: Sebum is an oily substance that can act as a defensive barrier for the skin. The blocking of sebum can lead to acne.
  2. Bacteria: Bacteria are naturally found on our skin. However, overload of this bacteria can lead to blockage of the skin pores which can lead to acne.
  3. Dead skin cells: Skin cells often shed to make space for new skin cells. When these dead skin cells get stuck in hair follicles, it can often lead to acne.

Other causes of acne:

Let’s look at some other minor causes of acne. These are given below:

  1. Oily or greasy products like creams or lotions can clog the skin pores, which can trigger acne.
  2. Stress can increase cortisol, which can promote acne production.
  3. Certain medications like steroids, anticonvulsants, or birth control pills can trigger acne formation.
  4. Foods high in sugar can act as a trigger for acne.

What exactly is skin dryness?

Skin dryness refers to reduced hydration on the skin. This often leads to flaky, patchy or rough skin. Fine lines or cracks might also be observed on the skin.

What are the causes of skin dryness?

Now that we know what exactly skin dryness is, let’s look at some causes of skin dryness.

  1. Environmental factors: Windy weathers, winters or low humid climates can often cause dry skin. Pollution can be another factor.
  2. Long baths: Long showers accompanied by excessive scrubbing of skin or too much usage of hot water in the shower can strip the skin of moisture. This in turn can lead to dry skin.
  3. Harsh soaps or detergents: Using harsh soaps or detergents can reduce the skin's moisture, which in turn can contribute to skin dryness.
  4. Skin conditions: Individuals suffering from dermatitis or psoriasis can also experience skin dryness.

What exactly is skin aging?

Skin aging would refer to loss of skin elasticity, collagen and moisture production which can lead to wrinkles and saggy skin.

What are the causes of skin aging?

Skin aging can be caused by 2 factors. This can be primarily Intrinsic and Extrinsic factors.

  1. Intrinsic aging and its causes: Intrinsic aging of skin occurs naturally when the skin starts to age over time. It can be influenced by genetics as well.
  2. Extrinsic aging and its causes: Extrinsic aging occurs due to lifestyle and environmental factors like pollution, poor diet, or reduced sleep.

Knowing the causes of acne, dryness, and aging skin can help in combating the issue, as we are aware of the root causes. Remember, a healthy and radiant skin is possible at any age!
