Skin Myths You Need to Stop Believing Right Now

It can be tricky to deal with skincare myths due to the hoard of misinformation that spreads through social media and agony aunts! Let us set apart facts from fiction by looking at what affects your skin health and unravel the truth behind these myths and mysteries! Want to know more? Read on!

Skin care myths

It is easy to be fooled due to multiple unverified posts available online. Let us look at some commonly observed skincare myths that have been debunked.

1. Natural skin care products are better:

This is the most commonly observed myth. However, natural or organic ingredients don’t necessarily equate to being skin-friendly. Natural skincare products might have less efficacy than their synthetic counterparts. Similar to synthetic skincare products, natural products, too, can trigger allergic reactions depending on the ingredients added to them. It is important to go for products that undergo clinical trials and are scientifically proven. So choose your products wisely!

2. Oily skin does not need moisturizer:

This is another common myth. Oily skin needs to be moisturized as much as all other skin types. Reduced moisture can lead to the skin compensating for the lack of moisture by producing more oil. This could lead to the formation of blackheads and even block the skin pores. Choosing the right moisturizer is important. Opt for a non-comedogenic, light-weight moisturizer that does not grease your skin.

3. The longer the skincare ritual, the better

A longer routine does not always guarantee better skin health. It can irritate your skin and even damage your natural skin barrier. Using cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen is the most basic and important step. You can add more steps to the same, but make sure not to go overboard with the same!

4. Sunscreen is for sunny days only!

This is the most common myth. UV rays can penetrate the skin through clouds even on cloudy or rainy days. Applying sunscreen is important for a glowing and vibrant complexion. So, make sure to use sunscreen irrespective of the weather and use sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.

5. More SPF guarantees more skin protection

Sunscreen cannot block 100 percent of the UV rays. A typical sunscreen can offer protection for 2-3 hours. It is recommended to reapply sunscreen after 2-3 hours. Make sure to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that can help in blocking UVA and UVB rays.

6. Expensive skincare products are the best!

Expensive does not equate to being the best. It is important to check the ingredients of the product and identify your skin type before going for any skin care product. It is important to follow proper skincare routines and avoid being influenced by myths floating around.

For choosing the right skin care routine and products, consult a skincare professional. Remember, repeating misinformation or myths does not make it true!
