Dry Skin? Learn to Identify & Manage It Right

Dry skin can be an uninvited guest that sneaks up, especially during winter. Do not worry, though, since with the right love and care, your skin can return to being glowing and smooth! Ready to say yes to radiant and lovely skin? Read on!

How to identify dry skin?

Dry skin can often appear flaky, scaly, or dehydrated. It can also have fine lines or a rough texture, which can lead to itchiness and irritation. However, skin pores are not visible in dry skin.

There are some methods that you can try at home to identify dry skin as well. Let's take a look:

  • Bare face method: You can check your skin after cleansing it. First, wash your face with a cleanser and pat it dry using a towel. Once done, wait for 30 minutes and check your face. If your face is dry, you will observe a flaky or rough texture around your skin.
  • Blotting sheet method: Another way to check your skin type would be to use blotting sheets. For this method, wash your face and then pat it dry using a towel and wait for 30 minutes. Place the blotting sheets to your face and hold the sheets up to a source of light. If there is little to no oil observed on the skin, then you have dry skin.

Why do you get dry skin?

Normal skin can produce enough oil, which can help in maintaining skin hydration. In case of dry skin, less oil is produced. It is also important to note that factors like wind, pollution, and cold climate can seep out moisture, leaving the skin dry and flaky. Using harsh soaps or other skin care products can also affect your skin.

How to manage dry skin?

Now that you know how to identify dry skin, let’s look at some simple ways to manage dry skin.

  • Use a gentle cleanser: Go for a gentle cleanser that is fragrance-free and contains key ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid. These three ingredients help to maintain the moisture content of the skin.
  • Moisturize quickly: Make sure to moisturize immediately after cleansing is done. Look for thicker moisturizers and go for creams over lotions. This would help to lock in more moisture as well.
  • Limit shower bath: Limit the shower bath to 5-10 minutes. This will help to lock in moisture and prevent skin from being dehydrated. Prefer using lukewarm water over hot water for a bath.
  • Reduce soap usage: Limit the usage of harsh soaps and go for soaps that have moisturizing preparations. Do not use perfumed soaps as they can strip your skin of moisture.
  • Avoid Bath sponges or scrub brushes: Bath sponges or scrub brushes have the potential to damage your skin or make it drier. If you wish to use them, pat or blot your skin with them instead of rubbing.

The above tips can help in managing your dry skin better and effectively. These small steps can create a huge difference. Cheers to happy skin!
