Matcha or Green Tea? Which Is Better for Skin

We all know having a cup of Matcha or Green tea is good for health, but what about your skin? Have you ever thought of using tea for glowing skin? Will matcha or green tea work for skincare, too? Let's spill the tea to achieve better skin health.

Matcha or Green tea - Choose wisely

Matcha and green tea have claimed their role in healthcare and are now trending in the beauty industry. Both are harvested from the same plant Camellia sinensis but their uniqueness is due to their way of processing and nutritional content. Matcha is a whole tea leaf powder while green tea has dried leaves which need to be brewed. There is a common saying - Eat your Greens - it truly goes with Matcha.

Let us look at how matcha fares in comparison to green tea:

  • Both matcha and green tea are loaded with antioxidants, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Since matcha is a concentrated form of green tea, the antioxidant power of matcha tea is up to 137 times more than green tea.
  • Since matcha tea is shade-grown, it preserves more L-theanine and chlorophyll. The vibrant green colour of matcha is due to its chlorophyll content, which helps to detoxify and flush out harmful toxins.
  • Matcha also possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help to protect from invading pathogens and reduce inflammation.
  • Matcha is the whisking of a whole tea leaf powder, hence it has fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2, and Vitamin E and nutrients compared to green tea. Caffeine is also on the higher side in matcha.

Matcha tea for glowing skin

Green tea and matcha are equally beneficial, but matcha seems to be more on the healthier side, considering its processing and nutritional content. Matcha is blooming in skincare as well due to its nutritional factors that fight skin concerns caused due to pollution. Pollution is the ever-growing concern of city dwellers causing skin dullness, dryness, dehydration, pigmentation, acne, fine lines, wrinkles and signs of aging. Matcha tea will work inside out to improve overall health and skin.

Some benefits of Matcha are given below:

  • Fights free radical and cell damage: High exposure to pollution and UV rays can cause free radical and oxidative stress. Matcha tea, being a powerhouse of antioxidants, helps to neutralize free radicals and fight oxidative damage. It also protects DNA and skin cell damage, thereby preventing dullness, pigmentation, and uneven skin tone.
  • Soothes inflamed and irritated skin: Prolonged uncontrolled oxidative stress and damage can result in inflammation and irritation. Vital nutrients in matcha tea have strong anti-inflammatory activity that helps to soothe inflamed and irritated skin, reduces redness, puffiness and acne breakouts.
  • Aids in detoxification: Whenever unprotected skin is exposed to pollution, it leads to a buildup of toxins, pathogens, clogged pores, and produces excess oil (sebum). The chlorophyll content of matcha tea acts as a natural detoxifier that deeply cleanses skin and helps to release toxins, impurities, unclogs pores, and prevents oily skin and breakouts.
  • Provides hydration: Matcha protects the skin barrier, locks moisture and hydration. It helps to prevent skin dryness, dark spots, makes skin supple, adds glow, and improves complexion.
  • Boosts skin elasticity: Matcha is packed with essential nutrients that are involved in collagen production. Collagen works to add elasticity and firmness to skin.

Matcha is a great option to have wholesome nutrition inside-out for improved skin health. Enjoy a cup of soothing matcha tea or apply beauty products; it will work at its best, but don't expect an overnight result. Consistency is the key.
