Night Skincare for Sun-Damaged Skin

After a long day of battling the UV rays and heat, your skin needs some love and pampering! Want to take care of those pesky red spots and sunburn? Follow the tips given below to achieve a healthy, sun-kissed skin.

What causes sun damage?

Sun damage can occur due to the following:

  • UVA rays: They break down elastin and collagen which can increase the risk of developing wrinkles and fine lines.
  • UVB rays: These rays can affect the outer part of the skin which can contribute to sunburn and inflammation. It can also result in skin tanning as more melanin is produced in response to sun exposure.

Why is a nightcare routine important?

Just like you sleep, your skin sleeps too. A proper nightcare routine can help rejuvenate your skin while you sleep, so that your skin wakes up refreshed and glowing just like you!

Let us look at the steps on how to begin your night care routine:

  1. Face cleansing: Wash your face with cold or lukewarm water and use a mild cleanser to gently cleanse your face.
  2. Toning: For toning your face, use a toner to balance out pH and prevent your skin from being dehydrated.
  3. Moisturizing face: Use moisturizers to keep your face smooth and supple all day long. It can prevent your face from going dry or developing rough patches.
  4. Apply eye cream: Eye cream can be applied under the eyes to mask puffiness and reduce dullness below the eyes.
  5. Overnight masks: Masks can bring out that hidden glow in your skin. Depending on your needs, apply overnight masks not more than 1-2 times a week.
  6. Lip care: Chapped lips can be observed, especially in a cold climate. Make sure to include lip balm in your nighttime routine.

What are some tips to keep in mind for sun-damaged skin?

Let us look at a few tips to keep in mind to deal with sun-damaged skin:

  • Never skip out on sunscreen! Sunscreen can protect your skin from sun damage. A good sunscreen can protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.
  • Wear a wide hat and long-sleeved clothes to prevent your skin from being too exposed to the sun.
  • Avoid going out during peak hours (10 am to 4 pm) if possible to prevent sun damage.
  • If you are using oral acne medications, check for ingredients present in them. If doxycycline or isotretinoin (Accutane) are present in them, then it would make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure. So be careful while going out in the sun in such a scenario. Avoid using such photosensitizing creams in the morning, you can instead incorporate them in your nightcare routine.

And just like that, you can tuck your skin to sleep so that it can wake up energized and refreshed in the mornings! Make sure to follow the above night care regimen consistently for healthy, glowing skin.
