Why Skin Needs Extra Love in Summer

Why does your skin need extra care during summer?

Too much heat and humidity in summer can result in exposure to ultraviolet rays (UV rays). This can cause your skin to become severely damaged with a high risk of sunburn. There is also excessive sweating that can result in clogged pores along with acne. As a result, it is important to pamper your skin in summer.


Why is sunscreen important?

Applying sunscreen should be an unavoidable part of your summer routine. Exposure to UV rays can accelerate the aging process and cause skin damage. Dark spots and fine lines are other devils that can affect your skin. Hence, make sure to go for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Remember to apply sunscreen regardless of the weather. Also, wear protective clothing to cover your skin from being tanned or sunburned. Wear cotton fabrics to allow your skin to breathe.


Why is hydration required?

Sun exposure can strip your skin of moisture, leaving it dry and flaky with rough patches. Hence, it is important to drink plenty of water (2-3 liters per day) to hydrate your skin. Choosing a light-weight moisturizer can nourish and soothe your skin. For increased hydration, you can apply moisturizer on damp skin. This improves its absorption rate.


Is cleansing needed?

As you spend more time outdoors, your skin can end up being dull and dry due to dust, sweat, and heat. In such cases, it would be essential to use a mild and gentle cleanser to cleanse your skin. A mild and gentle cleanser will get rid of the skin’s impurities without affecting the skin’s natural oils or skin barrier.


What are some skincare tips to keep in mind during the summer season?

Apart from cleansing, moisturizing, and application of sunscreen, which is a must, there are additional skincare tips that might come in handy:

  • Avoid going out during the peak hours (10 am to 4 pm) as that is when the heat and UV rays are the strongest. Use a cap or umbrella and wear a long-sleeved dress if you have to go out.
  • Do not take hot water showers or baths, as it can accelerate skin dryness.
  • Apply Vitamin C serum before sunscreen to maximize sun protection.
  • Nurturing your skin at night is also essential. Include retinol-based alternatives in your nighttime routine.
  • Exfoliation is necessary to remove those pesky dead skin cells! Do it 1-2 times a week.
  • Do not spend too much time in the pool, since pools have added chlorine in them that can dry out your skin.
