Pregnancy-Safe Skincare: What to Use & Avoid

The mom-to-be needs to have glowing skin, right? With so many skincare products to navigate, it can get challenging. However, you don’t need to worry as we have got you covered in this article!

What skin changes are observed during pregnancy?

Every pregnant mother might experience different changes during pregnancy. Some mothers might experience glowing and radiant skin, whereas others may not be so lucky and experience acne, stretch marks, or dark blemishes.

Let us look at a few skin changes observed during pregnancy:

  • Acne: Increased sebum production can result in the production of acne.
  • Blemishes or dark spots: Elevated production of melanin can cause too much acne and dark spots on the face.
  • Stretch marks: Stretch marks can be pretty common during pregnancy. It can be commonly found on the thighs or buttocks, though it can occur anywhere on the skin.
  • Varicose veins: The uterus' weight can result in pressure on the legs. This can cause vein compression and cause the veins around the legs to become blue. Usually, this can clear up after delivery.

What kinds of skincare products can be used during pregnancy?

  • If you constantly suffer from acne breakouts, the safest option to use would be Glycolic acid. It can brighten skin complexion and reduce skin pigmentation.
  • Topical antioxidants like Vitamin E or C can be beneficial for enhancing the skin’s glow.
  • Use moisturizers that employ ingredients like cocoa butter, peptides, or hyaluronic acid to maintain skin hydration. Our Lumi Dew moisturiser contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamides, and matcha extracts, which can improve the skin's glow.
  • Apply mineral-based sunscreens that have ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This would protect your skin from UV rays. Our Sunkissed hybrid sunscreen contains titanium dioxide along with Vitamin C and ceramide complex. This helps in providing ample protection against UV radiation.

What are some precautions that can be taken while using skincare products?

Not all products can be safer during pregnancy, so let us look at some skincare products that can be avoided during pregnancy and certain precautions that can be taken.

  • Prescription retinoids like isotretinoin can be avoided during pregnancy as it is associated with congenital defects. In case you need to use it, do consult a medical professional before usage.
  • Salicylic acid is generally used to treat acne breakouts. Higher doses have been reported to be risky. So, it is recommended to go for a lower dose.
  • Products containing Hydroquinone are often used to brighten the skin complexion and reduce dark spots brought on by pregnancy. However, since the skin tends to absorb more hydroquinone, it is better to minimize its exposure.

What is the skin routine to follow during pregnancy?

This is a general skincare routine that can be followed for both day and night:

  • Use a mild cleanser and wash your face.
  • Use a gentle moisturizer.
  • Apply an eye cream (Eye cream is for night routine; during the day, skip this step).
  • Apply sunscreen (For day routine).

Pregnancy is the perfect time to give more love and attention to your skin. Choosing safer and right skin care products can make your skin radiant and happy. So ditch the worry and embrace the glow!
