Summer Skincare Mistakes to Avoid

Summer is here, and you might be busy enjoying the sunlight, but do not let skincare take a backseat. If you are not careful, your skin can get chaotic. But do not worry; we are back with some tips for your skin as well as some common skincare slip-ups that you need to avoid.


What are some common summer skincare mistakes?

Some of the common summer skincare mistakes are given as follows:

  1. Skipping cleansing: Cleansing helps in the removal of oil, sweat, dirt, and impurities. Since sweating is so common in summer, it is important to cleanse regularly. Wash your face once in the morning, twice at night (double cleanse) with a mild and gentle cleanser. If you avoid cleansing your face, the dirt, dust, coupled with sweat, can settle on your face and increase the risk of breakouts.
  2. Not using sunscreen: Sunscreen is one of the most crucial parts of the summer skincare routine. Avoiding sunscreen can increase the risk of developing uneven skin tone, dark spots, and skin cancer. Opt for a light-weight sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.   3. Avoiding moisturizing: Moisturizing ensures that the skin remains hydrated and nourished. Failing to moisturize your skin can increase the risk of developing dry skin, fine lines, and cracks. 
  4. Not exfoliating: Exfoliation can help in the removal of dead skin cells and eliminate dust as well as bacteria. Using a gentle exfoliator can remove dead skin cells and bacteria, which needs to be done just once or twice a week.
  5. Not removing makeup properly/wearing heavy makeup: Sweat coupled with makeup has the potential to clog the skin’s pores. Make sure to double cleanse, remove makeup on time, as well as wear light makeup.
  6. Not hydrating oneself enough: Forgetting to consume water can be another major mistake. Dehydration can cause your skin to become dry, and there could be the formation of fine lines. 
  7. Using the wrong skincare products: Thick creams tend to clog the pores and trap sweat, leading to acne and irritation. Go for non-comedogenic, light-weight products that can allow your skin to breathe.
  8. Not layering skincare products correctly: Applying skincare products in the wrong order can prevent the skincare products from being effective on your skin. For instance, applying heavy creams first and light creams later can block the lighter creams from being absorbed. The right order to go about it would be cleanser, exfoliator (1-3 times a week only), toner (optional), serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and sunscreen (only in the morning).
  9. Not looking after your lips: Just like your skin, your lips need attention too! Use a lip balm with SPF 30 and apply it to your lips to keep them hydrated as well as protected from the sun.
